DUTCH RIDER GETS BMW RIDE AT WSBK ASSEN

08/04/2011

Dutch rider Barry Veneman has been given the chance to substitute for James Toseland on the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team at the Assen round of the Superbike World Championship over the weekend of 15-17 April.

The 34-year-old native of the Netherlands has been selected by the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team to substitute for British rider Toseland, who is still recuperating from a wrist injury sustained in testing.

The Dutch rider has a significant amount of experience in international motorcycle racing championships and, since he is quite familiar with the 4.555 km Assen circuit – which is also one of his favourites – he will be able to provide valid support to the team in setting up the BMW S 1000 RR for this third round of the 2011 series, which takes place from 15-17 April.

Barry Veneman’s previous experience includes a season in the MotoGP World Championship, riding a two-stroke 500, as well as various races in the Supersport World Championship. In addition, with Suzuki in 2010 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as part of the Endurance World Championship, as well as taking third place in the corresponding event in 2008.

Veneman has acquired a good knowledge of the BMW S 1000 RR, with which he raced – and will race again in 2011 – in the German IDM Championship. He has also participated in several development tests with the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team.

Barry Veneman was born in Zwolle (Netherlands) on 22 March 1977. He is married and has two children. His favourite tracks are Phillip Island in Australia and the TT Assen circuit in The Netherlands. His favourite motorcycle is the BMW S 1000 RR.
