PERFECT FOR THE RACETRACK – ON TWO WHEELS OR FOUR

In new movie The Chase, BMW has finally answered the debate over which dream machine would triumph in a race between a BMW M3 and a BMW S 1000 RR. The film pits the two iconic sports machines against each other in a real-life track race which leaves only one winner. But while both the M3 and the RR already ooze power, The Chase took it one step further. The car and bike were modified with performance-enhancing Akrapovic exhausts, before they took to the Autodrom Grobnik track in Croatia.

The S 1000 RR is the first supersport bike from BMW, and it screams power. With breathtaking acceleration and the lightest, most compact engine in its class, it was built to tear round the racetrack at scorching speeds. Since it burst onto the scene in 2008, the RR has been making waves. Everything about this bike has redefined the superbike class, from its split-face front and slim styling to its unbeatable acceleration and power.

For The Chase, the motorcycle was modified for an even more explosive performance. An Akrapovic Evolution System (Titan) exhaust was added – a combination of lightweight titanium, cutting-edge technology and that resonant Akrapovic sound. Fully prepared for the racetrack, the bike weighed in at a fully-fuelled 197kg with an impressive maximum torque of 118Nm, and a max output of 198hp.

The RR in The Chase was also fitted with a selection of HP Race Parts, which are available for RR owners, from track day enthusiasts to competitive racers – and they can make a real difference out on the racetrack.

These parts included the BMW Motorrad HP Race Power Kit – consisting of a new ECU and an Akrapovic titanium and carbon-fibre exhaust system; an HP Race Cover Kit which provides the appropriate covers to give the RR the perfect racing look; an HP Race Calibration Kit (a software tool for customising the parameters of engine management and traction control); an HP Race gearshift-pattern reverser for fast upshifts on the racetrack; a lightweight HP Race footrest plate for use in combination with the racing silencer; and an HP Race datalogger for permanent storage of lap and race data for further analysis.

Despite being dwarfed by the M3’s awesome 442hp, the RR’s power-to-weight ratio and amazing acceleration still allowed it to triumph.

Even a wet track failed to defeat the RR, thanks to Race ABS which delivered optimum precision and control. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) meanwhile reduced wheelspin and boosted traction when grip levels dropped. The 999cc bike sported the famous white, blue and red Motorsports racing livery for the movie, as did the M3. But even without the paint job, both would have been unmistakably BMW as they roared round the track. The Chase pitted the brand’s finest technology for cars and motorcycles against each other and although the RR was victorious, it was certainly not a one-horse race.

The high-performance M3 was tuned by Akrapovic development partner a-workx and fitted with an Akrapovic Evolution System (Titan) exhaust. It out-powered the bike with a max output of 442hp and a max torque of 435Nm. Although the heavier of the two contenders (weighing 1,620kg) the car was kept as light as possible, with an aluminium and lightweight steel frame. Capable of reaching 62mph (100 km/h) in just 4.8 seconds, and with a V8 engine packed with four-valve technology, it was the embodiment of raw power on the track. The might of the M3 combined with its flawless control made it a worthy contender for the RR. The machine featured Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR), as well as ABS. Losing to the RR has in no way damaged its ultimate sports car status.
