The Buildbase BMW Motorrad team, a partnership between BMW Motorrad UK and Hawk Racing, is pleased to announce that Steve Brogan and Howie Mainwaring will be spearheading the team’s 2012 assault on the Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship.
Steve Brogan, 31, from Liverpool, won the first ever BSB-EVO title in 2010 for BMW Motorrad. Brogan also won the 2008 Superstock 1000 title and came second in 2009. A fan favourite, Brogan will bring a wealth of experience gained in the Superstock, EVO and BSB championships to the Buildbase BMW Motorrad team.
Howie Mainwaring, 24, from Frodsham, is a hard-charging rider who finished fifth in the 2011 Superstock 1000 Championship, including an impressive race win at Brands Hatch. Howie’s enthusiasm and energy will help drive him and his team-mate Brogan to deliver their best possible performances.
Since its introduction in 2010, the BMW S 1000 RR has taken the world of Superstock racing by storm, taking two consecutive Metzeler National Superstock 1000 titles in the UK at the hands of Jon Kirkham in 2010 and Buildbase BMW Motorrad rider Richard Cooper in 2011.
The RR, ridden by Steve Brogan, also won the inaugural BSB-EVO title for BMW Motorrad in 2010 – the S 1000 RR’s first year of British racing. Barry Burrell also secured third in the 2011 BSB-EVO Championship for the Buildbase BMW Motorrad team.
The Superstock riders will join the previously announced Buildbase BMW Motorrad British Superbike racers Dan Linfoot and Barry Burrell for the official BSB test at the Cartagena circuit on Spain on 01-03 March.
Brogan said: “I am really excited about riding for BMW Motorrad once again. We had a fantastic result in 2010 when we took the BSB-EVO title. I expect this year to be as tough as ever and I have been working hard to get back to full fitness since the crash last year, and physically and mentally I’m at the very top of my game and very excited to get out there and race.”
Mainwaring said: “This season is going to be fantastic. The BMW has absolutely dominated Superstock for two years and the Buildbase BMW Motorrad team have put together an incredible bike. Their experience and skills will give me a fantastic opportunity to take the title. And I'm looking forward to racing alongside Brogan. Obviously I'm younger and braver, so I'll be the faster rider!"
Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: “This year we have two very fast and experienced lads who will ensure that the BMW S 1000 RR is once again at the sharp end of racing. Brogan’s experience with both the bike and the series will be a real asset and he and Howie will work very well together. Thanks to our strong 2011 season, we have a wealth of setup information and race data which, combined with the new and improved RR from BMW, puts us into a very good position for the start of the season.”
