RR TAKING IT TO THE TOP IN JAPAN

21/04/2011

The dynamic and immensely powerful S 1000 RR has taken the motorcycle world by storm and since its release it has revolutionised the sports bike market. For owners, it is the total riding experience which is addictive – not just the immense power but also its ease of delivery, clever rider ergonomics and the abundance of world leading technology that not only increases usable performance but also active safety.

From World Superbike competition at the highest level, to championship success in national racing classes around the world, the RR has become a class leader as well as a sales success in the Supersports category that for many years has been dominated by the ‘big four’ Japanese manufacturers.

Therefore, it was with a great deal of satisfaction that BMW Motorrad Japan director, Ekrem Sak recently accepted the Supertest World Association (SWA) ‘Bike of the Year Award’ for the RR in Japan – home of some of the greatest sports motorcycles ever produced.

The RR, which was unveiled at the end of 2009, was only introduced to the Japanese market in April 2010, so for it to be awarded ‘Bike of the Year 2010’ by the Supertest World Association (which consists of well-known motor journalists and media throughout the world) is a considerable achievement.

This was the first time for a BMW Motorrad model to be ranked the highest in the

‘Bike of the Year’ award that is annually voted for by the SWA members, so it is without a doubt, a great moment for all involved in the RR project back in Germany.

Marking this accomplishment, BMW Motorrad Japan Director Ekrem Sak received the winning trophy for the RR from Kohei Ichimoto, Editor in Chief of the famous Japanese motorcycle magazine, ‘Young Machine’, which is a member of SWA.

Interestingly, the photo-session to mark this achievement had to be abandoned part-way through, due to the intense earthquake activity that went on to made headlines of a different kind all over the world last month.

Since then, a new racing and riding season is underway and the RR is continuing its success on the racetrack, as well as flying out of BMW Motorrad showrooms around the world just as quickly. Whether on the track or on the road the RR is gathering an ever increasing number of fans, many of whom in the past would not have thought such a motorcycle was possible from BMW Motorrad.
